From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Freshman 149-pounder Luke Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) beat all three of his opponents, and the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team went 1-2 as hosts of the annual Si Ostrach Meet at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (4-12) defeated Muskingum University, 40-15, but fell to Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.), 26-18, Thiel College (Pa.), 35-9.

Versus RIT (5-9), the Spartans jumped out to an early 15-5 lead thanks to a 12-6 decision by 125-pounder Josh Hall (Galloway, Ohio/Bishop Ready), a pin from freshman 141-pounder Connor Medlang (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), a 4-2 decision by Marcelli, and a 5-0 decision by Snyder. After an RIT pin 165, freshman 174-pounder Nick Lees(Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) earned a tightly contested 5-3 decision to bump the lead to 18-11 in favor of the hosts. However, the Spartans would lose their remaining three matches, ultimately falling 26-18.

In the last matchup of the afternoon, Thiel (15-7) led 11-0 after back-to-back major decisions and a decision.  Marcelli got the Spartans on the board with a 2-0 decision that improved his team-best win total to 28 (28-10 overall). At 174, freshman David Brunk (Hood River, Ore./Hood River Valley) pinned Marco Crivelli to cut the Thiel lead to 17-9. However, the Tomcats would win the remaining three matches en route to the 35-9 victory.
