From NYU Athletics
The New York University wrestling team captured its third
consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship,
defeating Case Western Reserve University and the University of
Chicago at home at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on
Saturday, February 15.
In its first match of the day, the team dominated CWRU by a score
of 38-7. NYU then faced Chicago in the UAA Championship match.
After falling behind the Maroons 15-6, the hosts rallied for three
straight victories to tie the score at 15, but trailed 18-15
heading into the final bout of the day at 174 pounds.
Senior Chris Amro delivered the win in
dramatic fashion, pinning Chicago's Charles Scherer at the 1:43
mark to give NYU a 21-18 win and the Association Championship.
"Chris had an awesome performance today," noted Head
Coach Bruce Haberli. "He went out there and
wrestled like a beast."
With the two victories, NYU closes the dual match season with an
overall record of 10-9.

- NYU's 141-pounder Brandon Jones earned Most
Outstanding Wrestler honors, going 2-0, including a technical fall

was named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year as well, while Chicago's
Paul Papoustis was named UAA Rookie of the Year.
- Jones led a group of six NYU grapplers who earned All-Association
honors at their respective weight classes. That number represents
the most All-UAA honorees in a single year ever for NYU, which
produced five such honors at the 2013 Association Championship.
- Amro, who posted a major decision victory over CWRU's David
Brunk in addition to his pin, was All-UAA at 174
pounds. Patrick Sheehan was named All-UAA at
184 pounds after going 2-0 with a pin over CWRU's Connor
Driscoll.
- DJ Albonico (149), Matt
DiGiovanni (157) and Dan
Brereton (197) also went 2-0 en route to All-Association
accolades.
"Every year our goal has been to win a UAA Championship, and we've
been able to accomplish that three years in a row," said Senior
Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "Six All-UAA wrestlers
are the most we've ever had, and we'll look to keep increasing that
number next year.
"Chris Amro had an outstanding match to give us the
win against Chicago, and it was particularly special that he did it
on Senior Day."
Amro, Brereton and fellow senior Anthony
Chu were all honored prior to the final match.
