Chicago Wrestling Wins Al Hanke Invitational at Elmhurst

The University of Chicago wrestling team won a pair of individual weight classes en route to the team title at the 2014 Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.

The Maroons scored 119 points to edge host Elmhurst College, who totaled 113 points. They were followed by Harper College (96 points), Milwaukee School of Engineering (92 points) and Waubonsee Community College (39 points).

Junior Adam Wyeth won both of his matches to take the 133-pound title. In the final, he defeated senior teammate Jake Schramm 7-5. Sophomore Gabe Martinez earned a pin in the third-place match.

At 141 pounds, freshman Charlie Banaszak won all three of his matches, including a 14-1 major decision in the final. He also tallied an 18-2 technical fall in his opener. Senior Jacob Smith posted a 3-1 record, including two pins, to finish in second place at 149 pounds. Junior Joe Ellis pinned two of his opponents to capture third in the weight class with a matching 3-1 record.

At 165 pounds, freshman Paul Papoutsis finished in third place at 165 pounds with one pin and a 3-1 mark. Senior Sam Pennisi won two of his three bouts to earn second at 184 pounds. Senior teammate Preston Werth was third at 184 pounds, posting a 3-1 mark and one pin.

Junior Mario Palmisano was second at 197 pounds, going 2-1 on the day with one pin. Senior Jeff Tyburski wrapped up with a 2-1 record and a second-place showing at heavyweight.
