Chicago Finishes Second at UAA Wresting Championships

The University of Chicago wrestling team took second place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, with a win over Case Western Reserve University and a loss to New York University on Saturday.

The Maroons wrapped up their dual meet schedule with a 4-10 record. Three UChicago wrestlers picked up individual UAA titles – junior Adam Wyeth (133 pounds), freshman Paul Papoutsis (165 pounds) and senior Jeff Tyburski (285 pounds). Additionally, Papoutsis was named UAA Rookie of the Year.

UChicago started the day with a 28-18 win over Case. Wyeth got the Maroons on the board with a 9-7 decision at 133 pounds and freshman Charlie Banaszak followed with a 13-4 major decision at 141 pounds  to give the team a 7-6 lead. The Spartans won three of the next four, with two decisions and one forfeit. Papoutsis won his match at 165 pounds with a 7-4 decision.

Down 18-10 with three matches to go, UChicago's wrestlers delivered at the higher weights. Senior Sam Pennisi (184 pounds) and junior Mario Palmisano (197 pounds) each scored first-period pins. Tyburski won via forfeit to close out the match.

NYU then beat Case 38-7 to set up the championship final versus UChicago. The match started at 184 pounds as the Violets took an early 6-0 lead. Tyburski evened the score with a second-period pin. At 125 pounds, senior Jake Schramm won his match 7-2 while Wyeth followed up with a pin in the second period. NYU won the next three matches to tie the score 15-15 with two matches remaining. Papoutsis put UChicago back ahead with a 6-4 decision, but the Violets tallied a pin at 174 pounds to get the 21-18 victory.
