NYU Earns NWCA Team Scholar Award

The New York University wrestling team has been honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) with the 2014-15 NWCA Division III Scholar Team Award. In addition, Matt DiGiovanniJohn MessingerRaymond Jazikoff, and Patrick Sheehan eached received the distinction of NWCA Scholar All-American.

To qualify for the NWCA Team Scholar Award, a team must submit the average cumulative grade point average for 10 wrestlers, of which at least six must have competed at the NCAA Regional this year.

NWCA Scholar All-Americans must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year) and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in top six at the NCAA Regional Championship or win more than 66 percent of matches and wrestle in 50 percent of scheduled dates.

DiGiovanni, a politics major in the College of Arts and Science, recently wrapped up his NYU career with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Roanoke, VA. The senior captain finished his season with a 13-5 record and All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors after missing the first half of the season due to injury.

Messinger concluded his sophomore year with a 29-11 record and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional. A neural science major in the College of Arts and Science, Messinger was named All-UAA at 165 pounds.

Jazikoff, a sports management major in the School of Professional Studies, won a team-high 34 bouts this season and finished in sixth place at the NCAA East Regional. The freshman started the season at 157 pounds before finishing at 174 pounds, winning double-digit bouts at each weight class.

Sheehan recently earned All-America honors for his success on the mat. The senior captain won the 184-pound championship at the NCAA East Regional and finished in seventh place at the NCAA Championships in Hershey, PA. A Psychology major in the College of Arts and Science, Sheehan ended his senior season with a 26-5 overall record.

NYU finished its 2014-15 season with the most dual wins in team history (21) and captured the Centennial Conference Regular Season Championship and the UAA Championship, and was NCAA East Regional Runner-Up. The squad also set program records by sending the most wrestlers to NCAA's (4) and producing the most All-Americans (3).
