The New York University wrestling team competed at the 82nd annual Wilkes Open Wrestling Championships, hosted by Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on Sunday, December 28.

NYU had 16 different grapplers wrestle against opponents from schools across Division I, Division III and junior colleges. No team scoring was kept at the event.

Nathan Pike (133 pounds) and Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds) each finished in fourth place in their respective weight classes.

"Our guys got the opportunity to wrestle top-notch opponents," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "I feel we battled hard, especially Pike and Jazikoff, who were both able to place."

Highlights

- Pike won three bouts on the day, including one by major decision and one by fall.

- Jazikoff won four bouts to improve his overall record to 18-9 on the season.

- After dropping his first bout, Matthew Coppola battled back to win three straight at 149 pounds.

Richy Cruz (149 pounds) and John Messinger (165 pounds) won two bouts each.

Austin Day (133 pounds), Nick Matthews (141 pounds) and DJ Albonico (149 pounds) each recorded one victory.

"This was a good test for our guys after the holiday break and will help prepare us for the National Duals in Indiana," continued Luce.
