In a dual meet that came down to the final match, the University of Chicago wrestling team topped Elmhurst College 24-18 on Saturday.

The Maroons (6-3) won their sixth-straight dual and the Bluejays dropped to 4-4 on the year.

Freshman Devan Richter got UChicago off to a flying start at 125 pounds with a quick pin only 50 seconds into the match. Senior Adam Wyeth then contributed a 6-1 decision at 133 pounds. But Elmhurst won the next match and then picked up a forfeit to tie the team score at 9-9.

Undeterred, UChicago rattled off three-straight wins. Senior Devon Range (157 pounds) won his first match of the year 7-2, followed by dominant victories from sophomore Paul Papoutsis (165 pounds) and freshman Nick Ferraro (174 pounds). Papoutsis earned a 16-1 technical fall and Ferraro put his opponent away 11-1.

Elmhurst climbed right back in with a technical fall and a major decision to draw within 21-18. The last match of the day at heavyweight wound up being the decider. Senior Mario Palmisano fell behind 7-1 after the first period. However, he tired out his opponent and rallied hard to win the match with a takedown in the final minute, 10-9.

"It was good to come away with the win," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "We had some of wrestlers really step up. The important thing was that we put it on Mario's shoulders and he got it done. Falling behind 7-1 and coming back to win 10-9, you don't see that much at heavyweight. It just shows that Mario has something special when it comes to tiring opponents out and scoring points when he needs to at the end of matches."
