University of Chicago wrestler Paul Papoutsis advanced in the consolation bracket to highlight UChicago's first day of action at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational on Friday.
The Pete Willson Invite is the oldest and largest small-college wrestling tournament in the country and has run annually since 1938. A total of 32 teams are in the field with more than 260 wrestlers, and nine of the teams currently ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) top 30 rankings.
The Maroons fielded eight wrestlers in the tournament. Papoutsis got through to day two after a 3-1 day at 165 pounds. The sophomore won his first two matches with one pin, but lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 2-seed. He then won his wrestleback match 10-5. Papoutsis will try to reach the third-place match on Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 AM.
Three other UChicago wrestlers went 2-2 on the day in the double-elimination format. Freshman Elliot Henderson (141 pounds), sophomore Michael Sepke (149 pounds) and freshman Nick Ferraro (174 pound) all picked up multiple victories on the day.
