From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team was in action on Saturday in its first invitational-style meet of the year, competing at the RIT Invitational in Rochester, New York.
Junior Nick Lees paced the Spartans, contributing 11.5 points towards the team total. After dropping his opening match of the 174-pound bracket, Lees battled back to finish in sixth-place in the weight class. He earned four-consecutive victories at one point, including pins against Alfred State College's Nathan Sisler (1:18) and John Carroll University's Gabe Susinski (0:42) and a technical fall against WPI's Justin Marsh (18-2).
Making his collegiate debut on Saturday, freshman AJ Vetturini added another 4.5 points towards the Spartans score, winning his opening match of the 157-pound bracket by major decision (15-6) over RIT's Cody Lutz. He added a consolation draw victory by pin (0:40) against Robert MacDonald of Norwich.
Sophomore Connor Gordon claimed a pair of wins as well to score 3.5 points for the team. Gordon earned an opening-round in the 157-pound draw win by pinning Norwich's MacDonald at the 1:15 mark, and then claimed a 6-3 decision of Lutz of RIT in the consolation.
Other scorers on the day for CWRU included sophomore Nate Tommas, who earned 3.5 points after winning a 2-1 decision against SUNY-Oswego's Tim Scalisi in the opening round of the 165-pound championship bracket, and freshman Gavin Dersh-Fisher, who claimed a major decision win (14-3) against Cole Boone of Norwich in the 184-pound weight class consolation draw to add another 2.0 points towards the Spartans tally.
CWRU wrestlers totaled 25.0 points during competition to finish 12th in the team standings at the meet.
