NYU Captures Jim Aguiar Invitational Title

The New York University wrestling team won the Jim Aguiar Invitational, which was held at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH, on Sunday, January 17.

NYU, currently ranked #22 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), finished with a team total of 160.5 points, just ahead of #15-ranked Williams College (151.5 points). 

Overall, nine teams competed in the Open Tournament.

Two NYU wrestlers, Austin Day (133 pounds) and Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds) won individual titles.

Day won three bouts, including a sudden victory over Dylan Nuttal of Bridgewater State University in the final.Jazikoffrecorded two technical fall victories before posting a 5-4 decision overCJ Luth of Southern Maine University in the final.

"Austin had a good tournament and he knows he has a lot to work on to get even better," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "Ray wants to be an All-American, and this is just a stepping stone towards his goal."

Ian Burke took second place at 149 pounds. He produced two falls and a victory by decision before falling in the final toDaniel Del Gallo of Southern Maine.

Adrian Herrera also posted a second-place finish at 174 pounds. He won two matches before having to declare a medical forfeit in the final.

Several NYU wrestlers produced third-place finishes, including Justin Martinez (157), Kyzen Smith (174), Gaaret Marinelli (184), and Kyle Paterson (HWT).

"Winning the tournament is a true testament of the depth and talent we have on this team," Luce added.

HIGHLIGHTS:

-William Gockel-Figge produced two falls and finished in fourth place at 184 pounds.

- Jake Wilson also recorded two falls and took fourth place at heavyweight.

"We had no wrestlers in three weight classes, but the rest of the guys stepped up and put bonus points up throughout the tournament," Luce explained.
