From Case Western Reserve University Ahletics
The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team placed fourth out of 13 teams competing at the 31st-Annual John Summa Tournament, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea on Saturday.
Freshman 157-pounder Andrew Munn and sophomore 285-pounder Brian McNamara led the Spartans by each placing second in their respective weight classes.
Munn opened with an 8-1 decision versus Landon Lohr of Waynesburg then followed by a 6-4 decision victory over Wabash's Connor Guzior. Munn went on to the quarterfinal to win with a 19-4 technical fall over SUNY Oswego's Mike DeCapua and then won a 5-2 decision against Wabash's Christian Rodriguez in the semifinal. In the championship match, Munn lost a 2-0 decision against Wabash's Nick Bova.
McNamara opened the tournament with pin against Washington & Jefferson's Derek Allen and then picked up a 2-1 decision (TB-1) over Andrew Sierawski of Baldwin Wallace. In the quarterfinal match, McNamara recorded his second pin of the day by taking down Brockport's Jacob Morris in 6:13. He won his semifinal match by medical forfeit over Nathan Barcaskey of Ohio Northern. In the championship match, McNamara fell in 2:29 to Waynesburg's Jake Evans.
The Spartans also had two wrestlers that each placed fourth in their respective weight classes and another two wrestlers that each placed fifth and sixth.
Freshman Michael Petersen finished fourth in the 149 pound weight class, including a pin in 2:06 over SUNY-Oswego's Kyle Torre and another pin in 2:12 over Brockport's Jordan Kayes. For the season, Petersen now has a team-leading seven pins.
Sophomore Gavin Dersh-Fisher also picked a fourth-place finish by posting a 4-2 record in the 197-pound weight class. He opened with a pin in 4:55 over Thiel's Devan VanVliet, but then fell to James Ritchie of Baldwin Wallace. Dersh-Fisher responded by winning his next three matches, including a 16-1 technical fall victory against Washington & Jefferson's Robert Craig.
Freshman Andrew Hoover posted a 3-2 record to finish fifth in the 141 pound weight class. He opened the day with a 9-2 loss versus Ohio Northern's Jeff Andrews, but came back to win a 7-2 decision over SUNY-Oswego's Max Kutsepau and also a 5-1 decision over BW's Patt Mcginnis. He then lost a 9-2 decision against Wabash's Brice Everson, but responded with an 8-5 decision victory over Brockport's Sean O'Hagan in the fifth-place match
Senior Matt Moy placed sixth in the 125 weight class and picked up three wins on the day, including a 13-2 major decision over Matthew O'Connor of Thiel. He followed that with a 5-3 decision over Muskingum's Dillon Lewis.
CWRU wrestlers combined to score 91.5 points during the tournament to finish fifth. Wabash finished first with 165.5 points, followed by Baldwin Wallace in second with 119.5 points and SUNY-Oswego in third with 119.0 points.
