From NYU Athletics
John Messinger of the New York University wrestling team was named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Division III Men's At-Large Third Team on Tuesday, June 6.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a scale of 4.0, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
The recent graduate is the second NYU wrestler to ever receive the prestigious honor and the first since 2000 (Tyrus Bookman, Second Team). Messinger is the 21st NYU student-athlete to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
The two-time captain, who was previously named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second-straight year, wrapped up his stellar NYU career by qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time in as many years. The Putnam Valley, NY, native finished his senior season with a 36-6 record and his third-straight All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honor.
Messinger, who graduated with the fourth-most wins (115) in program history, earned a neural science degree from NYU's College of Arts and Science. He was also named the College's valedictorian.
