NYU Wins Twice at Grapple at the Garden

From NYU Athletics

The New York University wrestling team won a pair of matches at the fifth annual Grapple at the Garden on Sunday, November 27, at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. NYU first defeated Johns Hopkins University 27-13, before defeating Muhlenberg University 37-12.

"You're not going to find a better atmosphere for college wrestling in our area," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "The competition is great, but its great to give our guys the opportunity to wrestle at MSG."

Three different grapplers won both their bouts for NYU to help the squad improve to 6-0 in dual meets this season.

Leading the way were senior captains John Messinger and Matthew Coppola, who each won a pair of bouts.

"We got a nice talk from our coaches between matches and I thought we came out re-focused in the second match and wrestled better," said Coppola. "It was awesome to get the opportunity to wrestle on the floor of MSG.

Other Highlights:

- Wayne Yuan earned two forfeit victories at 125 pounds.

- Anthony Calvano and Austin Day each recorded a victory at 133 pounds. Day's win came by technical fall.
