Three weight class titles spurred the University of Chicago wrestling team to a third-place team finish at Elmhurst College's Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point topped the 10-team field with 113 points, while the Maroons totaled 106.5 points.
Sophomore Jason Lynch was the 184-pound champion with a 4-0 record. He tallied two technical falls and one first-period pin. Freshman Grant Morrison was the winner at 141 pounds. His 3-0 record included two major decisions and a technical fall. Freshman Kahlan Lee-Lermer was also 3-0 at 149 pounds with a second-period pin and two major decisions by matching 14-4 scores.
A trio of Maroons also took third place in their respective weight classes. Freshman Steve Bonsall was 3-1 at 157 pounds, scoring a pair of major decisions. At 165 pounds, senior Michael Sepke went 3-1, including a major decision in the third-place match. Sophomore John Jayne earned a pair of victories at 174 pounds to grab third.
Freshman Kyle Peisker also recorded a fifth-place showing at 157 pounds. He went 3-2 with a technical fall.
"It would be hard to be disappointed with our effort - we scored a lot of points," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "A few wrestlers exceeded their seeds and we almost won the tourney without entries in two weight classes. John Jayne was not seeded and did an outstanding job finishing third. Sepke went up against a defending NCAA champion in the semifinals and looked good in his loss."
