Spartans Compete at 2017 Ohio Intercollegiate Open

Select members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team competed at the 2017 Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday in the Veale Field House on the CWRU campus.

With the majority of the field at the open consisting of NCAA Division I and II wrestlers, the Spartans had five of their 13 wrestlers place within the top seven throughout the tournament.

Sophomore Michael Petersen placed fourth in the Open 157 weight class with a record of 2-2. He won by fall (6:27) against Tiffin's Derek Gross and won a 5-2 decision over Otterbein's Christian Koch.

Freshman Brian Kent finished fourth in the Open 174 weight class with a record of 1-2. He claimed an 18-7 major decision victory over Niagara Community College's Mark Ohanian.

Junior Gavin Dersh-Fisher placed fifth in the Open 197 weight class with a record of 4-1. He won by fall (6:37) over Notre Dame's Paul Ivy, earned a 6-1 decision over CWRU freshman Michael Hughes, won by a medical forfeit over Mercyhurst's Wes Phipps and claimed a sudden victory (4-2) over Ohio's Mason Kroening.

Sophomore Alec Hoover finished sixth in the Open 125 weight class with a record of 2-2. He won by fall (5:00) against Tiffin's Nathaniel Stubblefield and then won by technical fall against Niagara Community College's Matt Genau (17-1).

Sophomore Isaac Collier placed seventh in the Open 157 weight class with a record of 3-2. He earned a 5-1 decision over Akron's John Iacano, claimed a 7-6 decision over Ohio's Daniel Contraguerro and won a 7-3 decision over Niagara Community College's Ryan Sebesta.
