Spartans Finish 2-1 at Quad Meet on Saturday

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling won two of their three matches at a quad meet on Saturday in Urichsville, Ohio. The other schools competing were Waynesburg, Penn State Behrend and host Kent State University at Tuscawaras.

The Spartans lost a heartbreaker against Waynesburg in the early match by a score of 25-19, but came back to defeat Penn State Behrend in the second match by a score of 39-16 and also defeated Kent State in the third match by a score of 33-18. CWRU improves to 5-3 in dual matches this season.

In the early match against Waynesburg, the Spartans came away with five victories, including three decisions and one major decision. Sophomore 133-pounder Alec Hoover earned the 18-6 major decision victory Josh Kuslock and then sophomore 141-pounder Andrew Hoover picked up the 4-0 decision over Matt Lascola.

Waynesburg won three of next four matches to take a 19-13 lead, but the deficit was quickly erased after an 8-2 decision from senior 184-pounder Nate Tommas and then a 6-2 decision for junior 197-pounder Gavin Dersh-Fisher. The Spartans dropped the heavyweight match which secured the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

Versus Penn St. Behrend, the Spartans opened with a 15-0 lead due to a decision by freshman Anand Shah at 125 (12-10), forfeit at 133 in favor of Alec Hoover, and a pin from Andrew Hoover at 141 (3:51). A major decision from Behrend was quickly cancelled when sophomore 157-pounder Andrew Munn pinned Donnie Kerr in 2:06.

The Lions earned the win at 165, but senior Nick Tommas pin Zachary Ishman at 174 (3:39) to give CWRU a 27-10 lead. Behrend picked up a pin at 184, but the Spartans answered with a pin by Nate Tommas at 197 (4:31) and a pin by junior Brian McNamara at 285 (6:07).

Versus Kent State, Shah put the Spartans on the board first with a 4-3 decision over Zion Clark and then Alec Hoover picked up a win by forfeit at 133. Andrew Hoover earned his third victory of the day after pin Austin Bailey at 141 (1:15). CWRU would go on to win three of the next seven matches to secure the 33-18 victory.
