From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
Sophomore Alec Hoover of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team advanced to the championship semifinals of the 133-pound bracket at the 2018 NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships, hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana on Friday.
Alec Hoover is one of three Spartans that will be competing on Saturday, as junior Gavin Dersh-Fisher and sophomore Andrew Hoover each advanced to the consolation quarterfinals of their respective weight classes.
Alec Hoover began his day with a pin at the 3:00 mark versus Olivet's Spencer Fox. In the quarterfinals, the second-year Spartan squared off against Adrian's Dominic Paterra and Hoover earned another pin (1:31) to advance to the semifinals of the 133-pound bracket. Alec Hoover is now scheduled to face Owen Doster of Wabash College tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
Dersh-Fisher opened his day in the 197-pound bracket with a 14-6 major decision victory over Muskingum's Antonio Zapata. After a loss to Otterbein's Drew Kasper in the quarterfinals, Dersh-Fisher came back to pick up a 7-3 decision over Olivet's Clayton Highmore. He will now get ready to face Trine's Anthony Neal tomorrow in the consolation quarterfinals.
Andrew Hoover began his day in the 141-pound bracket with a 6-4 decision victory over Trine's Caleb Maddox. After a loss to Alma's Brendan Ladd in the 141-pound quarterfinals, Andrew Hoover bounced back to earn a 7-4 decision victory over Mt. St. Joseph's Nathan McClanahan. Hoover is now slated to match up against Wabash's Brice Everson tomorrow in the consolation quarterfinals.
In addition to the three Spartans advancing, junior Brian McNamara picked up a win in the 285-pound weight class on Friday. McNamara began his day with a 3-0 decision over Manchester's Nick Joyner. However, he saw his collegiate season end after back-to-back losses to Nathan Barcaskey of Ohio Northern and Nate Temple of Otterbein.
After one day of competition, CWRU wrestlers have totaled 17.0 team points.
