From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team placed ninth out of 15 teams competing at the 32nd-Annual John Summa Tournament, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Saturday.
Junior 197-pounder Gavin Dersh-Fisher and sophomore 157-pounder Andrew Munn led the Spartans by each placing fifth in their respective weight classes.
Dersh-Fisher fell to Brockport's Triston Engle in the first round, but came back to earn an 11-6 decision over Waynesburg's James Zeremenko. Dersh-Fisher then went to tally three more victories, including a 5-3 decision over Brockport's Jerrell White and an 8-4 decision over Thiel's Landon Westover. In the fifth-place match, Dersh-Fisher won in a tiebreaker – 1 (2-1) over Wabash's Chris Wilson.
Munn opened the tournament with a loss to Brockport's Corey Farrell, but rallied back to pick up a 17-5 major decision win over Ohio Northern's Rhett Roeder. Munn then picked up three more victories, including a pin against Muskingum's Michael Kashuba in 41 seconds and a 21-6 technical fall victory over Brockport's Jordan Kayes. In the fifth-place match, Munn closed his day with a 9-4 decision over Alfred State's Galton Mike.
The Spartans also had a wrestler place sixth and seventh in their respective weight classes.
Sophomore Andrew Hoover posted a 4-2 record to finish sixth in the 141-pound weight class. He opened the day with a pin over SUNY-Oswego's Anthony Sountis in 4:25 and then earned a 7-0 decision over Wabash's Daylan Schurg. After falling in the quarterfinal match, Andrew Hoover earned two more wins, including a pin over Baldwin Wallace's Tai Bloch. Andrew Hoover dropped the fifth-place match to Washington & Jefferson's Michael Heinl.
Sophomore Alec Hoover placed seventh in the 133 weight class and picked up three wins on the day, including an 8-0 major decision win over Wabash's Jonah Shillings. He then won the seventh place match by earning a 9-1 major decision victory over SUNY-Oswego's Anthony Ianno.
CWRU wrestlers combined to score 48.5 points during the tournament to finish ninth. Wabash finished first with 189.5 points, followed by Wheeling Jesuit University in second with 140.5 points and Brockport in third with 125.0 points.
