NYU Finishes Third at Citrus Invitational

NYU Finishes Third at Citrus Invitational

From NYU Athletics

The New York University wrestling team wrapped up action at the Citrus Invitational on Saturday, December 30, at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

NYU finished the two-day event with 120.5 points and in third place among 11 squads in the team standings. Fourth-ranked Augsburg University and Upper Iowa University (Division II) finished in first and second place, respectively, with 211 and 195 points.

"Overall, I'm happy with our performance," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "It was good for our guys to see a different type of competition. These Midwestern schools wrestle tough."

Leading the way for NYU were third-place finishers Matt Noble (133 pounds), Will Crisco (141 pounds) and Jack La Corte (197 pounds).

Also finishing among the top five of their weight class were Austin Day (133 pounds, fourth), Matthew Coppola (149 pounds, fourth), Evan Drill (149 pounds, fifth), Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds, fourth), and Jacob Lill (285 pounds, fourth).

NOTABLES:

- Eleven of the 17 competing NYU grapplers placed in the top eight at the event.

- NYU last competed at the Citrus Invitation in 2015-16 and finished fifth of 11 teams. Day, a Florida native, placed second in that event at 133 pounds.

- La Corte's record now stands at 19-3 and he is undefeated against Division III competition this season.

"Having Jack back in our lineup is huge," added Luce. "He looks good coming off a minor injury and we need him to continue to wrestle tough going forward."

NYU returns to the mat next Thursday and Friday, January 4 and 5, at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, IN.

"I like where we are at heading into the National Duals," concluded Luce. "We will be even closer to 100% health-wise and our lineup will be solid out there."
