Maroons Takes Seventh Place at Elmhurst Invitational

The University of Chicago wrestling team had six of its wrestlers place at Elmhurst College's 36th-annual Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.

The Maroons took seventh out of 12 teams in the invite with 54 points. Host Elmhurst won with 117.5 points.

UChicago dominated the 157-pound bracket by advancing two grapplers to the title match. First-year Jason Crary was the champion with a 3-0 record that included one pin. He defeated first-year teammate Will Britain in the final with a 6-1 decision. Britain finished 3-1 on the day, including an upset of the No. 2-seed in overtime.

At 197 pounds, the Maroons placed two more in the top six. Junior Duncan Payne was third in the bracket with a 4-1 mark. He tallied a pin and two major decisions, which included a 14-5 victory in the third-place match. First-year teammate Quinton Mincy placed sixth.

First-year Will Hare ended up fifth at heavyweight. Hare posted a 4-2 record and won his fifth-place match by a 2-1 score.

First-year Gage Bayless was sixth at 141 pounds. He went 2-3 on the day with a pair of first-period pins.

"We used this event to give some of our guys who had not been seeing a lot of action a chance to compete," Head Coach Leo Kocher said. "One of the wrestling program's goals this season was to make sure any team member that wanted to compete would get multiple chances to do so. We only covered seven of the 10 weight classes today and we placed in four of them and just missed in another two. Our wrestlers demonstrated that we have some true depth - particularly at 157 and 197, where two Chicago wrestlers claimed places."
