Five members of the University of Chicago wrestling team remain in contention after day one of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Friday.
The 17-team regional is hosted by Augsburg College. The top three finishers at each of the 10 weight classes automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.
First-year Jason Crary led the 10-man Maroon contingent with a pair of victories that vaulted him into the 157-pound semifinals. After receiving a first-round bye, Crary pinned his opening opponent in the first period, then followed up with a dominant 17-4 major decision.
Four other UChicago grapplers stayed alive in the consolation draw. Senior Nick Ferraro pinned opponents in the second and third period to go 2-1 on the day at 174 pounds. Sophomore Kahlan Lee-Lermer was also 2-1 at 165 pounds with a first-period pin and a 7-4 decision. At 141 pounds, first-year Chaise Hauck lost his first match after receiving a bye, then rebounded with a 10-1 major decision. First-year Will Hare collected two pins himself at heavyweight, going 2-1 overall.
Four UChicago wrestlers went 1-2 on the day – junior Jason Lynch (184 pounds), junior Duncan Payne (197 pounds), first-year Gage Bayless (133 pounds) and junior Mason Williams (149 pounds).
