The University of Chicago saw three wrestlers earn places at Saturday's 11-team Trine University Invitational, which kicked off the Maroons' 2017-18 wrestling campaign.

First-years Jason Crary, Will Hare, and Quinton Mincy all placed fourth in their respective weight classes to lead the way for the Maroons, who finished seventh in the team standings with 46 points. North Central won the team scoring with 119.5, Baldin-Wallace was second (96) and Olivet (Mich.) third with 86.

Crary had the best record of the day in his 157-pound weight class, going 5-1. He lost his opening-round match, but then went on to record a major decision and two-straight technical fall wins to reach the consolation third-place match, which resulted in a double injury forfeit to place him tied for fourth.

Hare kicked off his 285-pound bracket with an opening round pin (1:59) over North Central's Jon Czernek and then went on to pick up two-straight decisions before pinning Olivet's Trevor Piggot in 1:28 in the consolation semis to reach the third-place match, where he fell to North Central's Audel Ochoa.

At 197, Mincy rebounded from an opening-round loss to pin Adrian's Jaykeb Thorpe (2:14) and then beat Wheaton's Timothy Blickle, 3-2, in the consolation semis. He fell to Muskegon Community College's Baker Hadwan in the third-place match.

Dominick Reo added three decision wins (two majors) at 184, Will Britain (157) had three wins (including a pin), and Chaise Hauck (141) had two wins to round out the Maroons with multiple victories on the day.

"Ten freshmen scoring points at this season-opening invite was impressive and the guys did a good job," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "Even most of their losses were close ones. We had two goals for these rookies - compete hard and learn. They accomplished both."
