Maroons Advance Two Wrestlers at Wheaton Pete Willson Invitatonal

On the opening day of the biggest small-college wrestling meet in the country, the University of Chicago wrestling team advanced two wrestlers into the final eight of their respective brackets at Wheaton College's Pete Willson Invitational on Friday.

The two-day meet features 38 teams, including 10 teams ranked in the national top 25. UChicago stands in 17th place with 31.5 team points.

Steve Bonsall will wrestle on Saturday after going 3-1 on the day. The sophomore entered the fray as the No. 1 seed at 157 pounds. He came away with wins of 9-5 and 2-1 in the opening rounds, but absorbed a loss in the quarterfinals. Bonsall remained alive in the consolation draw with a 7-2 victory.

Fellow sophomore teammate Kahlan Lee-Lermer made his mark at 165 pounds. Lee-Lermer went 4-1 on the day with a pair of third-period pins to go with 11-0 and 3-1 triumphs.

Three other Maroons picked up wins as well. Senior Nick Ferraro posted a 2-2 record at 174 pounds with a pin and a 19-7 major decision. Junior Louis Demarco was also 2-2 at 133 pounds, which featured scores of 10-0 and 8-1. At 197 pounds, junior Joseph Scheidt was 3-2 with a third-period pin.
