From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team placed second out of eight teams competing at the BW Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea on Saturday.
Junior 133-pounder Alec Hoover and junior 165-pounder Isaac Collier led the Spartans by each placing second in their respective weight classes.
Alec Hoover opened with a pin in 2:14 over Mercyhurst Northeast's William Frederick and then followed that with a 6-0 decision over CWRU sophomore Duncan Clayton in the semifinals. In the championship match, Alec Hoover lost a 14-6 major decision to Baldwin Wallace's Dante Ginnetti.
Collier opened the tournament with a pin against Lourdes' Mike Andrzejewski in 2:20. In the semifinals match, he won by technical fall (20-5) over CWRU freshman Kyle Roberts, but then fell to Baldwin Wallace's Anthony Arroyo by a 13-1 major decision in the first-place match.
CWRU also had one wrestler place third in his respective weight class, while four other wrestlers placed fourth.
Sophomore Brian Kent placed third in the 184 weight class and picked up three wins on the day, including an 8-2 decision over Mercyhurst Northeast's Draven Douglas and an 11-5 decision over CWRU's Cade Lueker.
Freshman Brandon Callow finished fourth in the 133-pound weight class, including a 5-3 decision victory over CWRU's Duncan Clayton in the consolation semifinals match.
Freshman Jack Chipps also picked up a fourth-place finish by posting a 2-2 record in the 149-pound weight class. He was pinned by Baldwin Wallace's Stanley Bleich in the opening round, but then came back to earn a pin in 1:38 over Mercyhurst Northeast' Aaron Morris. Chipps then earned a 9-7 decision over CWRU's Brandon Barton in the consolation semifinals. He fell to Ohio Wesleyan's Max Beard in the third-place match to earn a fourth-place finish in the draw.
Freshman Aidan McCooey placed fourth in the 174 weight class and posted a 2-3 record throughout the tournament. McCooey's two wins both came by fall, first pinning BW's Aiden Cardaman in 4:40 and then pinning CWRU's Trevor Chippas in 6:03.
Senior Brian McNamara posted 3-2 record to finish fourth in the 285 pound weight class. He opened the day with an 8-2 decision victory over Lourdes' Jayden Neal and then earned a hard-fought win over Baldwin Wallace's Zachary Baker. McNamara fell in the next match, but came back to earn a 7-0 decision victory over BW's Jarod Miller in the consolation semifinals.
Spartan wrestlers combined to score 90.0 points during the tournament to finish second, while Baldwin Wallace took the team title with 189.5 points.
