Emory University junior Claudia Rowe scored a
career-best two goals on Sunday afternoon to pace the
seventh-ranked Eagles to a 4-0 win over the University of the South
(Sewanee) at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
Emory, which led the latest Atlantic South Region poll, remained
undefeated on the season, improving to 2-0-2. Sewanee, which
checked in at eighth in the region, dropped to 4-2-0.
The four goals were a season-high for the Eagles, matching the
team's total from the previous four games combined. Emory
also finished the game with season-highs with 23 shots and 17 shots
on goal. Meanwhile, the Eagles' defense limited the Tigers to
seven shots, with just four on goal.
Sewanee went on the attack early, with Tyler Edell took advantage
of an Emory defensive miscue and launched a shot on goal that
Eagles' junior keeper Liz Arnold tipped off the crossbar
for the save. After the initial pressure was applied by the
Tigers, the Eagles settled in, attempting the next nine shots of
the game unanswered, and outshooting Sewanee 14-2 the remainder of
the half.
Senior Charlotte Butker put the Eagles on the board in
the 24th minute with her first goal of the
campaign. The play was started after the ball came loose on
the outskirts of the six-yard box after a Butker corner kick.
Sophomore Cristina Ramirez was able to gain possession,
sending a pass wide to Butker, who lobbed a shot off the fingertips
of Sewanee keeper Olivia Glascoe, and into the net. It was
the team-leading second assist of the year for Ramirez.
Emory would take advantage of another corner kick later in the half
to add onto the lead. In the 36th minute,
junior Jordan Morell sent her kick into the six-yard box
and towards the far post, where Rowe was waiting, heading the ball
in for her first score of the campaign. Morell picked up her
first assist of the year on the goal.
Freshman Kaitlyn Dorka made it a 3-0 game early in the
second half on her first collegiate goal. Sophomore center
back Bailey Plummer earned the assist on the score,
sending a long ball forward from the backfield that Dorka caught up
to, beating the defender for a successful one-on-one chance with
the keeper.
Rowe would strike again for Emory in the
65th minute of play, this time deflecting a shot
attempt from Plummer into the net for her second goal of the
game. Rowe, who made her season debut on Sunday after missing
the first three games of the campaign, matched her career goal
total entering the game with the pair of scores.
Arnold played the first 70 minutes in goal, making a season-high
four saves during the game and earning her second win of the
campaign. Junior Kristin Temple made her season
debut in the net, playing the final 20 minutes to preserve the
Eagles' second shutout of the season.
