After dominating throughout the game, the fifth-ranked Emory
University Women's Soccer Team broke through for three goals in the
final ten minutes of play to defeat Transylvania University 3-0 in
Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
Emory has now won four-straight games, and remained undefeated on
the campaign with an overall record of 5-0-2. Transylvania
dropped to 2-6-0 with the loss.
Freshman Melinda Altamore led the Eagles offensively,
scoring the game winner in the 80th minute of play,
and assisting on an insurance goal moments later. Altamore's
goal, the first of her collegiate career, came after she took a
pass from senior Charlotte Butker from 35 yards out and
dribbled into the box, launching a laser shot past the keeper from
18-yards out.
Butker earned the assist on the play, her second of the season and
the 24th of her career, tying her for third place
in school history.
Within a minute, the Eagles struck again, with Cristina
Ramirez scoring her team-leading third goal of the year off a
pass from Altamore, who earned her first collegiate assist on the
play. Emory capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal
from sophomore Hannah Meyer in the
88th minute, her second of the year.
Despite not scoring until late in the game, Emory controlled the
pace throughout, outshooting the Pioneers by a 38-3 margin,
including a 21-0 edge in the first half alone. The Eagles'
defense held Transylvania to just one shot on goal, while Emory put
30 of its own on frame.
Goalkeeper Liz Arnold played all 90 minutes, making one
save to pick up her third individual shutout and the team's fourth
overall this season.
