From Emory University Athletics
Emory sophomore Hannah Meyer scored her first-career
goal in the first half, and senior Jennifer Grant added a
key insurance goal late in the second half, lifting the
11th-ranked Eagles to a 2-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan
at the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists Classic on Saturday
night.
The Eagles improved to 1-0-1 on the season with the win, while
Virginia Wesleyan dropped to 1-1-0 with the setback.
Meyer put the Eagles on the board in the
16th minute, scoring off an assist from
senior Karina Rodriguez. Rodriguez took a short corner,
passing the ball to Grant, who returned it to Rodriguez. The
senior forward then sent a ground ball through the middle of the
six-yard box, finding an open Meyer, who sent a shot into the back
of the net for the score.
The contest remained 1-0 until Grant struck for a goal of her own
in the 79th minute. SophomoreCristina
Ramirez took possession and drove around a defender, sending a
pass toward center and just outside the 18-yard box, where Grant
was waiting. Grant then finishing with a high arching shot
out of the reach of the Marlins' goalkeeper and into the goal,
extending Emory's lead to 2-0.
Emory finished with a 13-4 edge in total shots, including a 7-0
bump in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Liz
Arnold did not need to make a save, on her way to earning the
win.
