From NYU Athletics
The New York University women's soccer team defeated Ramapo
College 4-1 on Wednesday night, September 17, at Gaelic Park in
Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (3-3) and Roadrunners (1-3-2) were locked in a
scoreless battle until the 23rd minute when NYU struck first. The
Violets then rattled off three more goals to take a 4-0 lead
heading into the half. Despite a late goal in the second half by
Ramapo, the home team was able to come away with its third win of
the year.
"We've been working on attacking a lot this week, so we're excited
to see a lot of those things come together," NYU Head
Coach Michele Canning said. "It's nice to get
a lot of people game experience as well, because everyone works
really hard at practice and it's good to be able to reward
people."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Stephanie Ho kicked off the scoring effort
for NYU, notching her first-career goal in the 23rd minute. The
goal, assisted by Cami Crawford, came off a
scramble in front of the Ramapo net immediately following a corner
kick by Crawford.
- Melissa Menta broke through for her first
goal of the season next, putting in a solid individual effort for
the score in the 39th minute. The junior forward took the ball by
herself at the top of the box and proceeded to take it down into
the box up to the near post and put it past the keeper.
- Claire Shanahan scored next for the Violets,
again off a mad-scramble in front of the Roadrunner net after a
corner kick by NYU. The senior co-captain notched her first goal of
the season, assisted by Amy Elgin, in the 41st
minute.
- Ashley Cardounel capped off the scoring for
the Violets in the 44th minute. The sophomore midfielder found
herself taking a penalty kick for NYU after a Roadrunner defender
was called for a handball and red card in the box. Cardounel
successfully converted on the penalty for her second goal of the
season.
"I think it was important that we were able to keep scoring and
keep the momentum going because we've been playing really well in
the offensive zone all season but not finishing," Canning said.
"Everything just finally clicked and we were able to get the
goals."
