From University of Rochester Athletics
Tournament MVP Kim Stagg scored two second half goals as
the University of Rochester pulled away for a 4-0 victory over
Eastern Nazarene College in the Flower City Soccer Classic at Edwin
Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Stagg's two goals helped the Yellowjackets win the Flower
City title on a tiebreaker of goal difference. Rochester was
plus-six after the win. Union College, which defeated Fredonia,
3-2, in the first game Saturday, was plus three in two
games.
Rochester's Sydney Melton was named the Defensive MVP. She
was deemed the key defensive player in Rochester's back four. The
Yellowjackets defeated Fredonia, 3-1, on Friday and posted the 4-0
shutout a day later.
Offensive MVP honors went to Emily Dahlstrom of Union
College. In Union's 2-0 win over Eastern Nazarene on Friday, she
scored the first goal. She had one goal on Saturday vs. Fredonia as
well.
The other Rochester goals were scored by Laura Cowie-Haskell
and Gabrielle D'Angelo – both in the first half.
It took 37 minutes for the Yellowjackets to break through the
ENC defense, which was well organized as a unit. The Lions played a
high defensive line and caught Rochester offsides several
times.
Cowie-Haskell, who had a goal on Friday, broke the 0-0
deadlock at 36:31. A centering pass from Gabriella Goddette
deflected away from Carolina Manent and rolled to Cowie-Haskell at
the top right side of the penalty area. She dribbled a short
distance and cracked a shot into the right corner of the
net.
With less than a minute to play in the first half, the
Yellowjackets tacked on a second goal. Goddette's pass down the
left sideline sent DiAngelo racing clear of defenders. As she
reached the end line, she hit it hard and low along the line. ENC
goalkeeper Kristen Farley slid over to grab it – and did so
– but her momentum carried her and the ball just over the end
line for a Rochester goal.
Stagg netted her first goal at 50:16, driving it to the top
left corner of the net after Emily Downie played the ball wide. At
68:17, she got her second goal, this one a 25-yarder from the top
of the box to the top right corner after a pass from the left side
was disrupted by the ENC defense.
Rochester goalkeeper Aubrey Jaicks made three saves in 69:06.
Madilynne Lee played the final; 20:54. She did not record a
save.
Farley made five saves for the Lions and ENC had one team
save when a defender cleared the ball off the line.
