The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Webster University Thursday evening at the St. Louis Soccer Park.
Webster got on the scoreboard first in the seventh minute after a shot in the box slipped through a crowd of players and to the right of sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Geanon. The Bears got off to a slow start offensively, managing just one shot in the first half despite having four corner kicks, and the Gorloks held their 1-0 lead at halftime.
Washington U. took control in the second half, and quickly tied the score with a goal in the 49th minute. After a free kick near the corner, junior Jack West played the ball back to sophomore Kevin Goon who buried a long shot over the leaping Webster goalkeeper into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. Nearly 12 minutes later, sophomore Noah Lieberman knocked a free kick just outside the box through a wall of defenders to the corner of the net to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. Washington U. maintained possession much of the remainder of the match, limited the Gorloks to just one shot on goal in the half to seal the win.
Geanon finished with two saves in 45 minutes in goal for the Bears. Sophomore Nick Tannenbaum (1-0-1) took over in goal in the second half, earning the first victory of his career with one save. Webster finished with an 8-7 edge in total shots in the match, while the Bears had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including 5-0 in the second half.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series between the two teams 22-1-2 … It was Washington U.'s third straight win … Lieberman's goal was the first of his career, while Goon notched the second goal of his career … The Bears have now had seven different individuals score goals this season … The goal for Webster was the first allowed by Geanon this season in 270 total minutes in goal.
