Senior Cristina Ramirez scored twice and added an assist to lead the Emory University Women's Soccer team to a bounce back win, defeating Case Western Reserve University by a score of 4-0 on Friday evening at the Woodruff PE Center. With the victory, the Eagles improved to 2-1 in UAA action and 8-4 overall while the Spartans fell to 5-5-3 on the season and 0-2-1 in conference play.
Ramirez's two tallies were part of a four goal effort in the first half for the Eagles as Emory staked claim to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. The senior began the scoring just 4:13 minutes into the contest, netting her third goal of the year. Freshman Shivani Beall provided a textbook cross to Ramirez stationed right outside the goal who one touched it in to give Emory an early 1-0 advantage.
Beall doubled the Eagles lead to 2-0 just 9:19 minutes later as she lifted one over the head of CWRU's Sarah Newcomb on the great cross from junior Melissa Ardizzone. Ramirez assisted on the play giving a touch pass to Ardizzone before the junior found Beall right outside the six.
Ramirez found the back of the net for the second time in the contest in the 20th minute to give Emory a three-goal cushion. She put in the rebound following a close range header by classmate Hannah Meyer hit the post and bounced right to Ramirez who finished it into the empty net. Sophomore Madison Phaneuf also collected an assist on the goal.
Freshman Caroline Kolski provided the final tally for the Eagles with an impressive marker in the 39th minute. Kolski beat four Case Western Reserve defenders before blasting a shot into the upper left hand corner. The goal was the fourth of her rookie campaign, tying her with Ramirez for the team lead.
The Eagles held the Spartans to just eight shots in the contest with one being on target, outshooting CWRU 19-8. Beal and sophomore Grace Edgarton led the team with four shots apiece with Edgarton posting a team-high three shots on goal.
Emory will be back in action on Sunday morning as the Eagles host #19 Carnegie Mellon at 11:00 am. Prior to the start of the game, Emory will have a special ceremony to honor its two seniors – Hannah Meyer and Cristina Ramirez.
