Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer head coach Jim Conlon became the Bears' all-time wins leader in a 2-1 victory over Emory University Saturday in University Athletic Association (UAA) play at South Campus in Clayton Mo.
Conlon has a 142-33-13 (.790) overall record in nine seasons on the Danforth Campus. He led the Bears to a pair of NCAA Runner-up finishes (2009, 2015), five conference titles and eight-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
WashU improved to 9-2-1 and 1-1 in the UAA win the win, while Emory dropped to 7-4 and 1-1 in the UAA.
The match was even played in the opening 30 minutes, but it was WashU who struck first in the 33rd minute. Junior Mariana Alisio sent a cross into the box that sophomore Darcy Cunningham flicked into the near corner to make it 1-0. The goal for Cunningham was her first of the season.
Each team had four shots in the opening 45 minutes.
WashU extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 49th minute after nice combination in the box. Sophomore Caroline Dempsey made a run down the left side of the box and found senior Katie Chandler open who finished it off with a shot to the upper corner.
Emory cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute after Morgan Brandewie scored off a loose ball in the box following an Eagle corner kick.
Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made three saves to preserve the victory for WashU.
Emory outshot WashU 13-10 and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU continues its four-game homestand against No. 23-ranked New York University (7-2-2, 0-1-1 UAA) on Friday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Emory leads the all-time series 16-8-5, but the Bears have won the last two meetings … The goal for Chandler was the 29th of her career … WashU is 4-0 and has won its last 15 games at home … The goal allowed by the Bears at home was its first since Sept. 30, 2015, snapping a streak of nine-straight shutouts … The game-winning goal for Chandler was the 11th of her career, tied for seventh most in school history.
