CWRU Ends Home Schedule With 3-0 Win Over Oberlin

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team wrapped-up both its home and non-conference schedule on Friday night with a 3-0 win over Oberlin College at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The win raised the Spartans' record to 7-7 overall, while Oberlin dropped to 5-9-2.  Case Western Reserve also concluded its home schedule with a 5-4 record at DiSanto Field.

Junior Kimberly Chen was at the center of all three goals for the Spartans on Friday, finishing the contest with a goal and two assists.  She opened the scoring for CWRU in the 26th minute of play, beating the Oberlin keeper to the near post on a free kick from 29 yards out.  The goal was the fifth of the season for Chen.

The Spartans extended their lead just over five minutes later, when a pass from Chen sent freshman Christina Hickson on a breakaway up the field.  A quick move around a defender setup a one-on-one with the keeper, and Hickson was able to finish for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The score remained 2-0 until the final minute of the game, when a corner kick by Chen was knocked in by sophomore Lizzy Barnafor her second goal of the campaign.  The assist was the team-leading fourth of the season for Chen, who is tied with Hickson for the team lead with 14 points in 2018.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Metz made five saves in the game, and played all 90 minutes to record her fourth individual shutout of the season.  She improved to 7-7-0 individually with the win, while lowering her goals-against average to 1.26 and raising her save percentage to .818.

The Spartans outshot Oberlin 10-8 in the game, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.  Chen led the Spartans with three total shots and a pair on goal on Friday.
