Emory Knocks Off Brandeis, 2-1, for First UAA Win

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory University Women's Soccer team picked up its first University Athletic Association victory on Sunday afternoon, knocking off No. 14/15 ranked Brandeis University, 2-1, at Gordon Field in Waltham, MA.

The Eagles scored twice within the opening 26 minutes and withheld a late rally by the Judges to improve to 9-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the UAA. The loss was just Brandeis' second on the season as they slipped to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Senior Madison Phaneuf continued her scoring streak, netting her third goal in as many games to give the Eagles the lead in the 10th minute of the first half. Phaneuf converted on the penalty kick opportunity following a hard tackle by the Judges inside the six. The goal was Phaneuf's team-leading sixth goal.

Fellow senior Danielle Darius registered her first goal of the season in the 26th minute as she tapped in the loose ball after a scramble in front following an Abbe McCarter corner kick. Sophomore Samantha Hilsee knocked the ball to Darius where she was able to get a touch on it and put it past the Brandeis keeper.

The Emory lead held until the 80th minute when Daria Bakhtiari headed in a Lauren Mastandrea corner kick to cut the deficit to one. The Judges had three more chances over the final 10 minutes of play but senior Dani Staffin came up with the stop each time. Staffin finished with six saves in the contest.
