The University of Rochester women's soccer team picked up a huge road upset victory, defeating 2nd-ranked William Smith College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at William Smith's Cozzens Field.
 
First-year Lexi Bostley scored the opening goal for Rochester (3-1-1) and junior Jorie Freitag scored early in the second half for a key insurance goal which proved important as William Smith (4-1-0) notched a goal in the 57th minute.
 
Rochester first-year keeper Emma Schechter made a season-high eight saves in the victory.  In the net for the Herons was Amanda Kesler who made three stops.
 
William Smith opened the game with the first scoring chance, earning a corner in the third minute, leading to a shot by Sarah Olick-Sutphen which sailed wide of the net.
  
UR mounted a counter attack shortly after, but shots off the foot of Cesca Sheppard and Kerri Eden were saved away by Kesler.
 
In the 24th minute, the 'Jackets were able to get on the board when after a corner, Bostley intercepted a clear and deposited the ball into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
 
After the restart, Olick-Sutphen had a chance to equalize, but Schechter stood tall, making the save.  The Herons then had three straight corner kicks in a two minute span, but were only able to record two shots, neither of which were on frame.
 
Following intermission, the Yellowjackets caught the Herons off guard, applying pressure in the opening seconds.  The pressure led to a scramble in the box in which the ball got sent from Carolyn Richardsto Freitag who found the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 UR lead.
 
William Smith again looked to rebound, this time breaking the clean sheet in the 57th minute with a goal from Megan Barwick.  Olick-Sutphen earned the assist when she passed the ball to Barwick just before she slipped her shot inside the left post.
 
For the remainder of the game the Yellowjackets were held without a shot and earned just two corners, but the defense held strong against the Heron attack, leading to the upset victory.
 
The home Herons held the 21-6 shot advantage and led 8-4 in corners for the game.  UR's victory is the first against the Herons since 2010 and the first in Geneva since the early 1991.
