Case Western Reserve University sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America® Division III Women's Soccer Second Team, based on her outstanding achievements both on the pitch and in the classroom.
Washburn becomes the 111th person in the history of Case Western Reserve athletics to receive the CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. She is just the fifth player in the history of the women's soccer program to earn the honor, joining former Spartans Sandra Oh (1995, 1996 and 1997), Nancy Moon (1993), Suzanne Boyer (1992) and Elle Zadina (2017).
Washburn started all 19 games for the Spartans this season, leading the squad with a program-record 33 points on a program-record 14 goals and five assists. She led the UAA in the regular season in both points and goals. Washburn also set a school-record with seven game-winning goals. Washburn set the program-record for goals and points during the Spartans' 2-0 win over then 12th-ranked Chicago on November 1st.
Washburn, who became eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team after earning an Academic All-District selection in November, carries a 4.0 cumulative grade point average as a Computer Science major at CWRU. She has received UAA All-Academic honors, and was selected as the UAA Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-UAA First Team honors earlier this fall.
Case Western Reserve's 110 Academic All-Americans to begin the year ranked 14th-most among NCAA Division III Institutions and are 44th among all collegiate athletic programs.
Washburn and the Spartans received a NCAA Tournament bid for just the second time in the program's history during the 2019 campaign. Case Western Reserve ended the season with a 13-5-1 record under first-year Head Coach Jen Simonetti. The 13 wins tie a CWRU women's soccer record, while the team's 46 goals set a new program record.
