Senior Taylor Cohen scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime to send the No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to the Sectional Final with a 2-1 come from behind victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Saturday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.
Junior Kristen Reikersdorfer sent a perfect corner kick into the box that Cohen headed home for the 18th game-winning goal of her career. Cohen is tied for the WashU all-time mark in game-winners with Lori Thomas (1995-98).
WashU ran its unbeaten streak to 17 matches and improved to 18-1-2 with the win, while CMS had its season come to an end with an 11-5-4 mark.
"Claremont is a fantastic team. Jen is a wonderful coach that had her team prepared," said WashU head coach Jim Conlon. "We knew it was going to be a great soccer game and it was very entertaining to watch."
WashU advances to the Sectional championship for the seventh time in the last nine seasons and 11th time in school history.
The winner of Sunday's sectional championship game advances to the NCAA Division III Semifinals held Dec. 6-7 in Greensboro, N.C.
After a scoreless first half, CMS struck first in the 61st minute on a goal by Katrina Ostrom.
Just three minutes later, sophomore Gabbie Cesarone headed home a cross from junior Katy Mockett for the equalizer in the 64th minute. Reikersdorfer was involved in the play after she played the short corner to Mockett before the service.
WashU outshot CMS 21-3 for the contest, including 16-1 in the final 53 minutes. The Bears also had the 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Greenfield (18-1-2) picked up the win in goal for WashU.
