Wheaton, Ill., Dec. 7, 2013 – For the second year in a row, the Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming teams each won the team titles at the Wheaton Invitational. The Bears had three school records and 13 B-cuts on the second day of the meet Saturday.
The Washington University women scored 1,057 points at the two-day meet to win the team title over host Wheaton College who finished with 786.5 points.
The women's 200-medley relay team of sophomore Katie Anderson, sophomore Sophie Gan, freshman Lauren Carlos and sophomore Kristalyn McAfee broke the school record with a B-cut time of 1:45.54 in a time trial Saturday. Senior Chi Pham took McAfee's spot in the final of the event, and the foursome won in a time of 1:46.91. Gan had the third school record of the day for the Bears, breaking Allie Boettger's 2004 record of 2:21.86 in the 200 breaststroke with a winning B-cut time of 2:19.54.
The WUSTL women placed six swimmers in the top-eight of the 100 butterfly, led by freshman Connie Gan (57.44) and Carlos (57.46) who both recorded B-cuts to finish first and second, respectively. Sophomore Amanda Stadermann was third in 57.93, while junior Hannah Chase (59.74), senior Grace Murray (1:00.54) and freshman Claire Savage (1:00.68) to place fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Junior Sara Taege was the final event champion for the Bears, winning the 400 IM in a B-cut time of 4:27.91.
Anderson added a B-cut time of 57.67 to finish second in the 100 backstroke, while sophomore Hannah Lillioja (58.63) and Pham (59.27) placed third and fifth, respectively. The WUSTL women also had four swimmers in the top-seven in the 200 free, led by McAfee's runner-up finish and B-cut time of 1:51.49 after she clocked a time of 1:51.23 in the prelims. Sophomore Toireasa Rafferty-Millett (1:54.91), freshman MariMac Collins (1:55.73) and freshman Erin Polries (1:56.37) were fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively.
The Washington U. men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action in January. The WUSTL men travel to Wabash College for a dual in Crawfordsville, Ind., Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Bears then host the WU Invitational Friday-Saturday, Jan. 10-11.
