From NYU Athletics
Emily Doerner of the New York University women's
swimming and diving team and Steven Wu of the
men's tennis team have been named to the Women's and Men's Division
III College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
All-America Second Team At-Large, respectively. The honors were
announced on Tuesday, June 3, following both student-athletes being
named First Team Academic All-District 3 last month.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a
student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain
a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a scale of 4.0, and have reached
sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current
institution.
Being named to the All-America Second Team is just the latest in a
long list of academic accolades for Doerner this season. The junior
co-captain was recently named the NYU Junior Female Scholar
Athlete of the Year. In addition, she is a two-time University
Athletic Association (UAA) Winter Sport All-Academic honoree and a
three-time NYU Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee (IAAC)
Honor Roll member. Doerner also earned College Swimming Coaches
Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Honorable
Mention accolades as a sophomore.
In the pool, Doerner earned All-America honors with her
program-record-breaking 100 butterfly performance (eighth place) at
the 2014 Division III NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She
also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as part of the
Violets' 200-yard medley relay team. Overall, the St. Louis, MO,
native qualified for six events at the NCAA Championships.
During the season, Doerner swam the fastest time of any NYU women's
swimmer in four different events. In addition, she now
holds two individual and four relay team records, as well as
one Palladium Athletic Facility record, which were all set this
past season.
Wu is a four-time NYU IAAC Fall and Spring Honor Roll member
and three-time UAA Spring Sport All-Academic honoree. Wu was also
honored with the NYU Academic Achievement Award presented to
graduating seniors with a 3.5 overall grade point average or
higher.
On the court, Wu has become one of the best Division III tennis
players in the nation. In 2013-14, he was ranked #2 in the
Northeast Region and #24 Nationally. Based on his accomplishments
during the regular season, Wu was selected to participate in
the 2014 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships, becoming the first
Violet to qualify since 2002.
Wu graduated in May with his name firmly displayed in the team's
record book. He is now fourth all-time in single-season victories
at #1 singles (10), tied for fifth in single-season win-percentage
(.882, 15-2, accomplished in 2011-12), and number two with his 10
victories at #2 singles (also in '11-12). Career-wise, Wu is now
fourth all-time in singles win-percentage (.742, 49-17) and is tied
for fourth in singles victories. He is also fourth in career #1
singles wins (20), tied for third in #1 doubles wins (16), tied for
fourth in #2 singles wins (15), and tied for third in #2 doubles
victories (12).
