Season-Best Times Lead Tartans Past Grove City and Rochester

The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team increased its season dual meet record to 4-0 with a pair of wins on Saturday, November 8 when Grove City College and University of Rochester visited Pittsburgh. The Tartans defeated the Wolverines 225-75 and the Yellowjackets 175-124.

The Tartans opened the meet with a season-best showing in the 200-yard medley relay, winning with a time of 1:49.70, behind performances from freshman Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon), junior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), sophomore Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and freshman Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette).

Freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) won the Tartans second event, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best and team best time of 1:57.85. She later won the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 2:09.27 and the 200-yard IM in a season-best 2:11.73. She now leads the team in all three events.

Wong led a sweep of the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first in 1:00.46 ahead of junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) in 1:01.09 and freshman Brinda Malhotra (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) in 1:02.22. Malhotra took second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.69, recording her second season-best time of the day.

The 100-yard breaststroke was won by Tartan freshman Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) in 1:08.00. Hochstedler was just ahead of Wang in 1:08.76. Hochstedler also won the 200-yard breaststroke, touching in a season best 2:30.51 ahead of sophomore Natalie Kronfli (Potomac, Md./Stone Ridge) in 2:32.90 and Wang in 2:33.79.

Crews recorded a season-best time of 59.62 in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing second.

In diving, sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) placed second on the one-meter board with 379.45 points and third on the three-meter board with 364.85 points. Senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was third on the one-meter board with 377.25 points.
