Season-Best Times Lead Tartans at Total Performance Invitational

The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team continued competition at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College on Friday, December 5. The Tartans are in fifth place and had many season-best swims for the day.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of freshman Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette), sophomore Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga), freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), and sophomore Amanda Kuhn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) touched eighth overall in a season-best time of 1:38.01.

Freshman Mary St John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) recorded a season-best time of 2:08.90 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly and then finished ninth in the B-final with a time of 2:09.31. She later swam a best time in the 400-yard IM preliminaries (4:38.31) and finished 17th overall in the finals with a time of 4:39.23.

Freshman Marisa Ford (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) finished the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 1:57.84, as Marrese reached a season-best time of 24.30 in the 50-yard freestyle. Kuhn also broke 25 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.67.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) swam a season-best 1:06.32 to finish 13th overall, while junior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) was 15th in a season-best 1:07.16.

Junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) knocked more than two seconds off her season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke when she finished eighth overall in 57.95.

In diving, sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) placed second on the 1-meter board with 443.05 points after 11 dives, while senior Andie Azofeifa (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) was fourth with 382.75 points and sophomore Mallory Evanoff (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) was fifth with 363.15 points.

The 400-yard medley closed Friday's events as the team of Singhaus, Hochstedler, sophomore Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton), and Marrese finished in 3:55.77 to claim 10th place.
