From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team competed at the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 31 against the Panthers, California University of Pennsylvania, Clarion University and Duquesne University. The Tartans defeated CalPA 214-61 and Clarion 185.50-105.50 but fell to Pitt 234-60 and Duquesne 172-113.

In diving, sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) finished fifth on the 1-meter board with 232.85 points and ninth on the 3-meter board with 209.65, as senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was seventh on the 3-meter board with 227.85 points.

In the 1,000-yard freestyle, freshman Miranda Ford (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) touched third in 11:15.59 while freshman Hannah Soltz (Alameda, Calif./The College Preparatory School) was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best 1:06.19. Soltz later finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.99, another season-best time.

Also picking up a third-place finish was freshman Sarah Winget (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) in the 200-yard butterfly. Winget touched in a season-best 2:09.82. In the 500-yard freestyle, Winget earned a second third-place finish when she touched the wall 13 seconds faster than her previous best in 5:18.35.

Freshman Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) wasn't far off her season-best in the 50-yard freestyle when she touched in 24.69 to place eighth.

Junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.64 while sophomore Marisa Giglio (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) placed seventh in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 2:10.42.

Freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) swam in a few events for the first time, finishing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.05 and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.60. She also touched ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.29.
