Kimberly Hochstedler Breaks Carnegie Mellon Record in 200 Breaststroke

The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team finished competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday, February 14. The Tartans finished fifth overall as host Emory University won the meet.

Sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) earned All-UAA honors, placing second on the one-meter board with 398.20 points in the finals. Senior Andie Azofeifa (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) finished ninth overall with 344.35 points.

Freshman Miranda Ford (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) placed 13th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a season-best 17:51.92 while junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) took seventh in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.91 with junior Paige Sieffert (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) just behind her in 2:07.93. Freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had the best swim in the 200-yard backstroke when she won the B final heat in 2:05.12, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) provisionally qualified for the national meet with a school-record time of 2:21.65 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time won the B final while junior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) placed 16th overall in 2:29.81.

Sophomore Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 2:06.30 in the 200-yard butterfly, placing 10th overall.

Closing the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay. Junior Elissa Maercklein (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), Shi, freshman Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) and sophomore Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) finished sixth in 3:32.23.
