Elizabeth Aronoff and McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg of Emory Named Capital One Academic All-Americans

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior Elizabeth Aronoff (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Hawken School) and senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg (Centennial, Colorado / Cherry Creek) were each selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Aronoff was named to the Academic All-America First Team, after receiving second team recognition during the 2013-14 campaign.  Newsum-Schoenberg was selected to the third team, marking the first Academic All-America honor of her career.

The two Academic All-America honors give the Emory women's swimming and diving program 22 throughout its history, including 10 first team honorees.  In addition to Aronoff and Newsum-Schoenberg, junior Andrew Wilson (first team) was named to the Men's Academic All-America At-Large Team, bringing the total of Academic All-Americans in Emory Athletics history to 158, with 62 first team honors.

Aronoff was a part of Emory's National Championship and school-record setting 400-yard medley relay team (3:41.44) in 2015.  It marked the second NCAA title of her career, after she claimed a national championship in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 2014 NCAA Championships.  Aronoff added all-America honors with a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke and a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, and has now accumulated five all-America honors during her career.  She has a 3.904 grade point average as a Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology major, and is a two-time CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Newsum-Schoenberg capped off her collegiate career by winning the National Championship in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships, setting a school record with a time of 2:00.43 in the event.  She added an all-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and an honorable mention with a ninth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing her Emory career with eight all-America honors and four all-America Honorable Mentions.  Earlier in the year, she was named the UAA Swimmer of the Year after setting conference records in both the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, while claiming UAA Championships in the 500-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle events.  Academically, Newsum-Schoenberg is a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, and graduated from Emory with a 3.635 cumulative grade point average as a Political Science and Sociology dual major.  She was also awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier in the year.

Aronoff and Newsum-Schoenberg helped Emory win its sixth-consecutive NCAA Division III Team Championship in 2015, and the eighth overall in the program's history.  In addition, the Eagles claimed their 17th-consecutive UAA Title during the campaign.

The Academic All-America teams selected from the pool of Academic All-District winners, which were announced by CoSIDA in May.  Sports represented on the 'At-Large' team include women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.

To be eligible for Academic All-America ® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
