Emory Women Lead UAA Swimming & Diving Championship; Emory Men Tied with Chicago for First After Day 3

From Emory University Athletics

The host Emory University Eagles women's squad extended an already large lead atop the standings at the 2015 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, while the men find themselves tied for first place with the University of Chicago entering the final day of competition.

The Emory women have totaled 1,385 points to take a commanding lead over second-place Washington University (Mo.), which has 876 points, and the third-place University of Chicago, which has 806.  Following the top three squads in the women's standings are New York University (757), Carnegie Mellon University (695), the University of Rochester (523), Case Western Reserve University (437) and Brandeis University (209).

The men's side is considerably closer with both Emory and Chicago tied atop the standings with 1,054 points each, with New York University trailing by less than 100 points in third place with 955 points.  Washington is in fourth with 901 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon (683.5), Case Western Reserve (555.5), Rochester (531) and Brandeis (290).

Of the 15 events contested on Friday, new conference records were set in nine.  Three record-setting performances came from Emory athletes, including individual records from freshman Julia Wawer in the women's 200-yard freestyle (1:50.60) and junior Andrew Wilson in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.12 seconds), his second individual championship and conference record of the meet.  Emory also set a UAA record in the women's 200-yard medley relay, with sophomore Claire Liu, sophomore Annelise Kowalsky, freshman Megan Campbell and sophomore Marissa Bergh winning the event with a time of 1:42.80.

Other records set on the third day of the meet came from NYU's Philip Kang in the men's 400-yard individual medley (3:57.64), NYU's Emily Doerner in the women's 100-yard butterfly (54.63 seconds), Washington's Reed Dalton in the men's 100-yard butterfly (48.12 seconds), Chicago's Thomas Meek in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.89) and the Chicago men's 800-yard freestyle relay team (6:41.95).  Chicago's Matt Staab also set a UAA record on Friday, finishing third in the three-meter dive after recording a score of 579.65 in the preliminaries.  16 conference records have been broken during the first three days of competition at the meet.

Emory swept the top three sports in the women's 400-yard individual medley, with senior Megan Beach finishing first, followed by freshman Phoebe Edwards and senior Michelle York.  Adding event championships for the Emory women were junior Elizabeth Aronoff in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Wawer, freshman Cindy Cheng, freshman Rebecca Upton and senior Nancy Larson, while Campbell (2nd in the 100 Fly), Larson (2nd in the 200 Free), Kowalsky (2nd in the 100 Breast), and Cheng (2nd in the 100 Back) each claimed all-UAA honors.

Adding all-UAA finished for the Emory men were freshman Chandler Lichtefeld in the 400 IM (2nd), sophomore Christian Baker in the 200 Free (2nd), freshman Michael Grenon in the 100 Breast (3rd), freshman Alexander Hardwick in the 100 Back (2nd) and the 800 Free Relay Team of sophomore Mitchell Cooper, junior Eagan Zettlemoyer, Wilson and Baker (third).
