Six More Records Fall during Day 2 of UAA Championships; Emory Leads in Team Standings

Six conference records were broken during the second day of competition on Thursday at the 2015 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, with host school Emory University taking leads in both the men's and women's teams standings.

The Emory women jumped out to a large lead on the first full day of competition, totaling 699 points.  Washington University (Mo.) ended the day in second place with 425 points, followed by the University of Chicago (367), New York University (309), Carnegie Mellon University (287), the University of Rochester (275), Case Western Reserve University (193) and Brandeis University (89).

The race for the team title is considerably closer on the men's side, with the top-three squads separated by just 22.5 points.  Emory leads the way with 477.5 points, followed by Chicago with 458 points and Wash U. with a score of 455.  Rounding out the standings for the men are NYU (386.5), Carnegie (286), Rochester (235), Case (212) and Brandeis (129).

A pair of Emory swimmers broke UAA records in individual events. Senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.13, breaking former Emory swimmer Liz Horvat's previous record of 4:52.65 in the event.  Junior Andrew Wilson picked up a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 1:49.34, breaking the mark set last year by Chicago's Eric Hallman.

Emory also set conference records in both the men's and women's 400-yard medley relay.  For the men's relay, sophomore Mitchell Cooper, Wilson, senior Hayden Bakerand sophomore Hayes Burdette-Sapp won with a mark of 3:16.81 to break the record set by the team at last year's meet.  The women's relay of sophomore Claire Liu, sophomore Annelise Kowalsky, freshman Megan Campbell and senior Nancy Larson finished first with a time of 3:45.71, also breaking a mark set by the Eagles last year.

Other UAA record performances on Thursday came from Washington's men's 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:21.69) and NYU's Jeremiah Crowley in the 50-yard freestyle (20.13 seconds).

Kowalsky and Larson each added individual conference titles for the Emory women, with the former winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.46) and the latter claiming the title in the 50-yard freestyle (23.59), while the Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay of Liu, sophomore Marissa Bergh, freshman Ming Ong and Larson won with a time of 1:33.88.

All UAA finishers (top-three) for the Emory women on day two included freshmen Rebecca Upton (2nd) and Julia Wawer (3rd) in the 500-yard freestyle and Bergh in the 50-yard freestyle (2nd).  Earned all-UAA honors for the men on Thursday were sophomore Christian Baker (2nd) and Cooper (3rd) in the 500-yard freestyle.
