Maroons Race to Six More All-American Awards at Third Day of NCAA Championships

Two relays and four individuals secured All-American results for the University of Chicago swimming and diving teams at day three of the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday.

The women's 800-yard freestyle relay broke a school record, posting a time of 7:31.60. The 11th-place finish conferred Honorable Mention All-American status to sophomore Maya Scheidl, sophomore Alison Wall, junior Karen Chu and sophomore Cara LoPiano.

UChicago had two participants in the women's 100-yard backstroke and both racers delivered Honorable Mention All-American performances. Freshman Melissa Bischoff swam to 10th place in 56.18 and Alison Wall placed 13th in 56.62.

Sophomore Abby Erdmann reached the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly and tallied a 15th-place finish (2:05.94) to gain Honorable Mention All-American honors.

Additionally, senior Jennifer Hill broke the school record in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a prelims mark of 1:05.02. 

The Maroon men were also Honorable Mention All-Americans in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Junior Thomas Meek, sophomore Jonas Fowler, sophomore Jonathan Simoneau and junior Matthew Veldman combined to swim the race in 6:40.90 and take ninth place. Meek led off the opening 200-yard leg with a school-record time of 1:38.45.

In his postseason debut, freshman Connor Turkatte swam the men's 100-yard breaststroke in 57.76 (16th place). It was his first career Honorable Mention All-American award.
