Tartans Swim Past Rochester and Grove City

The Carnegie Mellon women's swimming and diving team competed at Grove City College along with the University of Rochester on Saturday, November 7 and topped the host Wolverines, 212-85, and Yellowjackets, 177-116.  The Tartans increased its season dual meet record to 5-0.

For the second straight meet, the Tartans' 200-yard medley relay team claimed top honors.  Sophomore Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon), senior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), junior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and freshman Jessie Li (Superior, Colo./Fairview) touched the wall with a time of 1:49.81 for a season best.

The Tartans swept the top three spots in the 200-breaststroke while finishing first and third in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) led the sweep of the 200-yard breaststroke after touching in a season-best time of 2:29.46.  Freshman Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) also turned in a season-best time of 2:32.02 to finish second while classmate Hera Miao (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) touched third with a time of 2:34.14.

Senior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) paced the Tartans with a season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke of 1:00.97 while Wong finished third with a time of 1:02.11.      

Crews was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly when she touched the wall in 59.30. Junior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished third after hitting the wall in 1:01.69.

The Tartans also earned victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Li touched first in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 54.39 to earn her first victory of the season in the event. In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Allison Caron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) touched first in a season-best 2:11.28 while senior Paige Sieffert (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) was second in 2:13.07.

Hochstedler also achieved a season-best time in the 100-yard breastroke when she touched second in 1:08.75 while Wang was third in a season-best time of 1:09.35.

The 400-yard IM saw sophomore Sarah Winget (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) take second in a time of 4:49.39 while sophomore Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) was third in 4:52.01.

Senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 230.49 and also the 3-meter diving event with a score of 244.36, with both scores going down as season bests.
