From NYU Athletics

New York University's women's swimming & diving team defeated SUNY Cortland 198-94 at its season-opening dual meet on Saturday, October 10, at the Palladium Athletic Facilitiy (PAF) in Manhattan.

"It was a really good start today. We swam better than I expected," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "Some freshmen really stepped up and performed. We're definitely ahead of where we were last year and headed in the right direction."

Isabelle Kitze won the 100-yard butterfly (58.74) and led the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:40.40). The sophomore also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.57.

"We all did really well today, and it was really exciting to watch all of the freshmen work hard and swim awesomely," said Kitze.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshman Haley Wen won two events: the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.64) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:40.52).

- Junior captain Elise Gibbs won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.35 and anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.40). Also participating in that event for NYU were freshman May Li, senior captain Krista Traub and sophomore Serena Yan.

"I think it went pretty well today," Gibbs said. "Our energy was pretty high, and teammates supporting teammates makes everyone perform better."

- Sophomore Austin Campitelli (259.14) and freshman Kelly Ryser (254.40) finished second and third, respectively, in the one-meter diving competition. Campitelli then took first in the three-meter competition with a score of 265.35.

"Austin picked up right where she left off with two NCAA-qualifying scores," said Diving Coach Scott Donie. "An incredible debut for Kelly. She was about half a point from an NCAA-qualifying score during her collegiate debut."
