New York University's women's swimming & diving team is in first place of nine teams at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational, which is being held Friday-Sunday, December 4-6, in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets finished the second day of competition with 727.5 points for first place, three points ahead of second-place Columbia University (724.5).
Junior Elise Gibbs broke her second NYU record of the meet with her event-winning performance in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.53). The team captain set the previous record of 1:03.58 during the 2014-15 season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Freshman May Li finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a NCAA-qualifying time of 56.63.
- Gibbs and Li also participated on the 400-yard medley relay team, along with sophomore Isabelle Kitzeand freshman Noel Leung. The foursome finished in second place with a NCAA-qualifying and NYU record-breaking time of 3:46.10. NYU's previous record was set at 3:48.45 last season.
- Kitze and Gibbs were also members of the NCAA-qualifying 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:34.02) with sophomore Serena Yan and freshman Sarah Stone.
"We had another outstanding day," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "I am thrilled with our performance, and I am looking forward to finishing the meet strong tomorrow."
- Divers Austin Campitelli (271.60) and Nia Sorgente (266.60) placed second and third, respectively, in the three-meter competition, both achieving NCAA-qualifying scores.
"I am happy with where the divers are right now," said Diving Coach Scott Donie. "This was a really strong field and they definitely rose to the occasion."
